In the world of coffee connoisseurs, a good grinder is often considered the unsung hero of the brewing process. It’s not just about crushing beans; it’s about extracting the full flavor potential from every grind. One grinder that has generated considerable buzz in recent years is the Sage Smart Grinder Pro, a versatile and feature-rich machine that caters to both novice and seasoned coffee enthusiasts. In this review, we will delve deep into the pros and cons of the Sage Smart Grinder Pro and compare it to other machines in its category.
What did we like about the Smart Grinder Pro?
One of the standout features of the Sage Smart Grinder Pro is its ability to consistently produce uniform grinds. Equipped with stainless steel conical burrs, it offers 60 different grind settings, enabling you to choose the exact coarseness or fineness you desire. This level of precision is crucial for various brewing methods, from espresso to French press.
In our testing, we found that it performed very well at finer grind settings such as for espresso brewing. Although we did notice a fair bit of clumping at finer grinds, we didn’t think this was the biggest issue as the problems with this can easily be fixed with a WDT(Weiss distribution tool) that separates the clumps. You can find a cheap option HERE.
The grinder’s LCD screen and user-friendly controls make it a breeze to use. Adjusting grind size, grind time, and the number of shots or cups is as simple as pushing a button. This level of customisation is especially appreciated by those who like to experiment with different brewing techniques. We did find that sometimes, after multiple uses, the grinder would change its grind setting by 1 or 2 points, so keep an eye out for that.
The Sage Smart Grinder Pro features a convenient timer function that allows you to control the dosage of coffee grounds. We found that is was reasonably precise in how much coffee was ground each time, about within a gram. This is very helpful if you are in a rush in the mornings and don’t want to be weighing out all of your coffee. We would have liked it to be slightly more precise so as to get the perfect grind amount each time, but for the price, we would say it does a fine job.
With a bean hopper capacity of 450g, the Sage Smart Grinder Pro is ideal for those who enjoy hosting coffee gatherings or for daily coffee drinkers. You won’t have to refill it as frequently, ensuring a more convenient and continuous grinding experience. Using this along with the timer setting will allow you to grind and then brew multiple coffees for you and your friends at home in quick succession.
The grinder ‘s low retention design ensures that minimal coffee grounds are left inside the machine after grinding. This feature is essential for maintaining the freshness and flavor of your coffee beans. We found that we were able to change the grind whilst dialling in espresso, and there was little to no noticeable effect from the grounds left in the grinder on our next shot.
Built with quality materials, the Sage Smart Grinder Pro is durable and built to last. The stainless steel burrs are not only excellent at grinding coffee beans but also resistant to wear and tear. We find this to be true for many of the sage appliances in that they feel expensive with not to many cheap plastic feeling parts.
What could be improved on the Smart Grinder Pro?
Our main issue with the machine, that we believe is important to mention is how it deals with grinding coffee at course settings. The course grounds produce a lot of fines, which are extra fine bits of coffee. The issue with these fine bits of coffee is that when you are brewing using a filter paper for example, the fines block the water from passing through the coffee bed and into the cup. When using this grinder for filter coffee, we ended up with lots of water stuck in the filter paper and not going into the coffee.
The Sage Smart Grinder Pro is not the most budget-friendly option on the market. It caters to serious coffee enthusiasts and may be overkill for casual coffee drinkers. Grinders in general are very expensive so it’s important to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of this investment. For some it may be better going for a cheaper option that does an adequate job. For others, holding out for a slightly better option like the Niche Zero, which is top of the class as far as home grinders go. The Smart grinder pro is however great for those beginners looking to get into coffee making as a hobby.
While it grinds coffee efficiently, it can be relatively noisy, which might be a concern if you’re trying to maintain a quiet environment, especially during early morning hours. It’s certainly not the noisiest grinder we have used but, it’s not the quietest either. If you are concerned about waking up partners or flatmates in the mornings, maybe considering a good hand grinder might be a better option.
It’s a bit on the larger and heavier side compared to some other grinders in its category. This might be an issue if you have limited counter space or plan to move it frequently. Again, for those living in a flat or a small house, a good hand grinder may be a better option due to its smaller profile.
So how does it compare to its main rival?
The Sage Smart Grinder Pro’s main rival is the Baratza Virtuoso+ which is a staple in many households. Let’s see how they compare in a few categories:
- Grind Consistency: Both the Baratza Virtuoso+ and Sage Smart Grinder Pro excel in grind consistency. The Virtuoso+ offers 40 grind settings, while the Sage provides 60, making it slightly more versatile.
- User Interface: The Virtuoso+ keeps it simple with a manual timer and an on/off switch, lacking the digital sophistication of the Sage Smart Grinder Pro.
- Price: The Virtuoso+ is generally more affordable than the Sage Smart Grinder Pro.
- Durability: Both grinders are built with quality materials, ensuring long-lasting performance although the Sage does feel and look more expensive.
- Capacity: The Virtuoso+ has a smaller bean hopper capacity (227g) compared to the Sage Smart Grinder Pro.
What’s the verdict?
The Virtuoso+ is a fantastic option for those who prioritize grind consistency and durability without the bells and whistles of digital controls. It’s a more budget-friendly alternative to the Sage Smart Grinder Pro. However, if you are looking for a more aesthetically pleasing and more robust option. We feel the Sage Smart Grinder has the edge.
Our final opinions on the Sage Smart Grinder Pro:
In conclusion, the Sage Smart Grinder Pro is a standout coffee grinder that excels in grind consistency, customization, and durability. While it comes with a higher price tag and some operational noise, it’s a worthy investment for coffee aficionados who demand precision and versatility in their daily coffee routine. When compared to other main grinder in its category, the Baratza Virtuoso+, it holds its own and offers unique features that cater to a specific niche of coffee enthusiasts. If you’re serious about your espresso brewing and not short on space, then it is a great option. However, if you are more into brewing filter coffee or short on space, we would recommend a good quality hand grinder.
